Abstract Paintings by Lou Schenker
My work is all about the masks we wear and the ones we take off over time. As I paint, I often scrape and sand, adding new layers – is similar to peeling back the masks I’ve worn as a son, brother, husband, father, and more. Sometimes I remove those old masks, other times I add new ones without fully letting go of previous ones. These masks hold onto beliefs, prejudices, and regrets, and they leave a mark on me, even when I try to leave them behind.
My marks aren’t just decoration; they’re echoes of what’s going on inside me. Just like masks they can obscure or distort reality, sometimes hiding what’s real. Through my new series of paintings, I aim to unmask myself, discovering what remains beneath the layers. Maybe I’ll find me, or maybe I’ll discover something more complex.
